I guess it was a few years back in Paris when I started seeing the rock-star-drinking-wine-on-stage thing. We were at a cool little place called La Cigale seeing the elusive, physcadelic Australian band The Sleepy Jackson. A tall curly-haired back-up singer clutched a bottle of wine for most of first set until he had polished it off. There is something pleasing to me about drinking wine straight out of the bottle... especially when it's someone from a grungy rock band. Bacchanalian and incongruous with the fancy and elitist vision of wine.
I was reminded of this last night when Kelly and I saw Pearl Jam at the Bill Graham Civic Center. Eddie Vedder had a bottle with him on stage that he seemed to finish during the show. Straight out of the bottle. During an especially dirty jam on the song "Alive" he pulled the cork and stood off to the side basking in the pulsing crowd and the music of his compadres. I couldn't really see the label but I would have to guess pinot by the bottle shape. Pinot Jam!
