OnMyList: Jobs I've Had

  1. Farm Hand:

Little organic farm where I did a little of everything. Pick tomatoes, potatoes, green beans. Harvest the eggs from the hens. Weed, prune, etc. Farm work is hard but at least you get to be outside, get a good tan, and get a workout.

  2. Sales clerk at Sports Page (sporting goods store):

Working at the mall and getting discounts on Nike stuff was pretty nice for a 16-17 year old.

  3. Broiler man at Burger King:

2 months. Not sure why in the world I did that..

  4. Video Store Clerk:

Not quite as exciting as in the movie Clerks, but pretty kushy for a high school job.

  5. Waiter:

Waiter at Clary's in Springfield after freshman year of college.

  6. Day care:

Worked as an after school object for crazy little kids to chase around.

  7. Wine and spirits merchandiser:

Pretty good job in college. Started learning a lot about wine here and met some great people.

  8. Cardio kickboxing instructor:

Got paid to work out. Nothing like having a class full of women following your every word.

  9. Bartender:

Worked at a great wine bar/wine shop/restaurant named Cherry Street Wine Cellar. Accumulated some depth to my wine knowledge and really enjoyed the people. Being able to taste many different wines frequently is a fantastic way to learn. One of my favorite jobs.

  10. Affiliate Sales:

    First after college job. Travelnow.com

  11. Director of Business Development, Europe:

Hotels.com. Lived in Paris for 2 years. Awesome experience.

  12. Executive Producer:

    Gusto! travel community

  13. Marketing Director, Crushpad:

Fantastic organization and great people. Nothing like working in grapes.

  14. Founder, OnMyList:

    My baby.

Brain Dettmer- Excavator of Old Books and Molder of Melted Plastic

The metal head piece is priceless. It's no Damien Hirst Diamond Head, but its just as cool in its' own recycled way. Brian has a very unique style of art.

Ways to be born. (Thankfully no photos)

It's an event that very few of us remember, I hope. Probably pretty traumatic. However if you could go back and do it all over again knowing what you know now, how would you be born? What kind of personal style would you throw into the ring? This writer takes a look at the possibilities.

american german in the mission

Img_1012 My friend Jason Houle was in from Germany this week.  It was good to see him.  We went to a cool documentary called "Pray for Me: the Jason Jesse Story" at the Roxie in the Mission.  Highly recommended.

Also hit Pizzeria Delfina where Jason broke his no carb diet.  Smart move on his part.  The apps were ridiculously good and the pizza was money as always.

Ratatouille

Remy Went to see this on opening night and it was fantastic.  I would recommend it to anyone but if you're into food, it's doubly cool.  The scene where the critic, Ego, tastes the Ratatouille is marvelous.  One of the best scenes I've ever seen animated or not.  I would actually argue that any format other than animation would have had a tough time expressing the emotion of the moment more purely.  It was perfect.

And of course it made me miss a Paris a little bit.

Back from MO

Img_0941 We're back from our trip to the big MO.  It was great to see so many loved ones and stressful trying to make enough time, get our house ready to sell, and run a fledgling business.  We broke in the pool at the boogie nights pad, had wonderful dinners, and saw many friends. We had problems absolutely everywhere trying to get on wireless networks.  Luckily I was able to connect via bluetooth via my blackberry 8800.  That was a lifesaver.

OnMyList had a great first week of life.  We picked up lots of users and killed productivity at our friends workplaces.  Next up:  facebook app, raise more money, get more users.  Most importantly, constantly tweak the little things.  Its easy to focus on the home runs, but its the walks, hit by pitches, smart base running that tend to wine games.  What you haven't read moneyball yet?

Tonight We Blast Off

After a fairly successful week of tweaks and improvements, we're ready to launch On My List a little bit farther now.  Tonight we'll send out to 1000 or so of our closest friends...and pray that the server doesn't do us in.  We're busy formulating a plan to move to Amazon's EC2 and S3. It sounds pretty cool in theory.  Hopefully its as cool in practice.

Go baby go.
